- UK hybrid city bus research and simulation study. This was an R&D study carried out by Newbus Technology in 2000. The task was to look into the research and development of hybrid buses matched to UK city bus operation. The program included logging actual duty cycles on service operation duty in London. From these performance envelopes, the duty cycles and system ratings were established. These were then used in the ADVISOR simulations to optimise the series hybrid systems.
- US hybrid city bus research and simulation study. This project investigated the potential fuel savings in US transit buses. The program was carried out in 2003 using the ADVISOR software from the National Renewable energy Laboratory (NREL) in Colorado. The work studied the design sensitivities for a range of vehicle design parameters. These majored on the application of lightweight bus structures and asdvanced series hybrid drive systems. The work also looked at the effect of ancillary loads plus a range of different duty cycles.
- ADL Enviro 200H hybrid bus research project. This was a major research and development project into the optimum configuration of series hybrid drive systems for UK city bus operation. The work was based on the original Uk research looking into the peak acceleration and deceleration ratings in actual service. These were used to configure the PM motor ratings, the PM generator ratings and the NiMH battery pack ratings. The work extended into developing both the electronic and mechanical solutions for the hybrid bus systems. The electronic work included custom operating software algorithms for the main vehicle controller. This optimised all the power and energy flows to achieve the target fuel savings, which were in the 30 to 40% range.
